Mall of America VDI Instructor Training

Mall

Hello, this is Derrick S. Washington Sr.

Gary Klugiewicz and I completed a Verbal Defense & Influence Instructor Training Course in Bloomington, MN today. We had a wonderful time training 23 amazing professionals from different disciplines. Our hosts for the training this week were the public safety staff of the Mall of America.

There were participants from Guam, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. Being able to teach contact professionals, tactics that can help them in their professional and personal life is very rewarding. Verbal Defense and Influence teaches non escalation drills that provides the participants the necessary tools to keep them safe no matter where the contact ends up, while looking good during the process.

Below Gary and I posed for a photo with the participants of the class.

[Video] Profanity: Don’t complicate a great arrest

Good Speak vs. Bad Speak – Strong Message / Strong Language

Within the Verbal Defense & Influence Training Program we have developed the concepts of Good Speak and Bad Speak. Good Speak generates voluntary compliance, cooperation, and collaboration between the speaker and his/her audience while Bad Speak hinders this process. While some police trainers extoll the value of “Tactical Profanity”, the use of profanity during law enforcements contacts, Vistelar places this in the category of Bad Speak.

Harry Dolan explains the value of following the Sterile Cockpit Rule in professional contacts. Professionals, like pilots, should remember the talking about personal matter or using non-professional language can lead to crashing the plane or landing at the wrong airport. Therefore, only professional language is allowed to be used on duty. Profanity does not represent the use of professional language. It should be avoided at all costs.

Derrick Washington, Sr. recently share a tactical tip with us that illustrates this point. His department had a great SWAT Call in process – meaning that they had taken Drugs, Guns, Money, and People. Everything was going great until one of the suspects complained after his arrest about being called a M.F. (Contact me if you need to know what M.F. stands for.) This generated a complaint the “tarnished / complicated” what would have otherwise been a great bust. It also resulted in several hours of intense training for these tactical operators working on saying and doing the right tactics during high risk stabilization arrests.

Watch the video and let us know what you think.

Derrick, thank you for sharing your experience and insight.
